Volunteer Opportunity Details

Classroom Partner

Location: Abbott, Midtown or Downtown Childrens Center

Summary:
To partner with a specific classroom in one of the 4 Children’s Centers and be a positive role model for the children. Children require a consistent environment and encouraging adults in their lives to succeed. The children throughout the YWCA of Minneapolis’ Children’s Centers are diverse in all aspects and learn in an anti-bias environment. The Classroom Partner will work with the staff to come up with creative ideas to make the classroom a healthy, fun and consistent environment for the children and will assist with hands-on learning.

Volunteer Openings:
YWCA Children's Centers accept volunteer applications on an ongoing basis. You will be informed when you apply if there are no current volunteer openings. If volunteer positions are full at the time you apply, your application will be kept on file for 90 days and you will be contacted should a position become available.

Outline of Volunteer's Responsibilities/Tasks::

  • Read books to the children
  • Play with them on the playground
  • Assist staff with art preparation and ideas
  • Decorate and organize the classroom shelves, walls and materials
  • Accompany the classroom on fieldtrips, trips to the park, library, etc.
  • Assist staff with helping the children to relax during nap time hours.

Qualifications:

  • Must pass background check
  • Previous experience working with children in a childcare setting highly desirable.
  • Experience working with at risk and special needs children preferable.
  • Willing to be an active participant in all classroom activities.
  • Proficiency in English.

Training/Supervision/Reporting:
Training must be provided. The supervisor will be determined by the program manager. The supervisor must be someone who works closely with the volunteer. Each month, the number of hours that the classroom partner works with the classroom needs to be documented by the volunteer’s supervisor and sent to the volunteer coordinator.

Commitment:
6 months minimum (exception being during the summer months), at least one time a week for a minimum of 1 hour with the classroom they are assigned to.

Outcome/Goals:
To establish a relationship with staff and help with keeping the classroom a great place for children to come to everyday.
