Job Summary
This part time, temporary position will be responsible for providing direct service to participants in the Girls Inc. Program, ages 9-14. Girls Inc. programming includes topics that inspire and educate girls in the areas of math, science, financial literacy, leadership development pregnancy prevention, and positive decision making. Girls Inc. at the YWCA of Minneapolis supports girls in becoming self-sufficient, successful adults. The Girls Inc. Youth Counselor will be responsible for building and maintaining relationships with the Minneapolis Public Schools and other youth serving agencies to meet necessary programming goals and objectives.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Minimum of two years experience working with youth (preferably girls) from low-income, inner-city families.
  • Two years college or continuing education, or equivalent, with special interest/aptitude and enjoyment of math, science, financial literacy, leadership development pregnancy prevention, and positive decision making.
  • Must have one-year minimum experience with planning and facilitating structured groups with diverse populations of youth and low-income youth.
  • Demonstrated ability to document age-appropriate and compensatory activities for girls.
  • Ability to inspire girls to be strong, smart and bold sm.
  • Ability to prepare for and facilitate effective group sessions.
  • Must have excitement for providing quality programming for girls.
  • Proven experience working with diverse backgrounds, cultures and perspectives.
  • Knowledge and ability to use computer and other technical resources to effectively accomplish work.
  • Reliable transportation and valid MN driver's license with minimum 1-2 years driving experience and clean record.
  • Ability to carry out duties independently as well as in a team setting to meet desired goals within the program and the Girls' and Youth Team.
  • Strong verbal, written and presentation skills.
  • Must possess excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work with a variety of people and styles and must be able to focus on the customer-the girls served and their families.
  • Strong problem solving skills required and must be able to make quick decisions while using good judgment.

Preferred:

  • BA or BS in education, youth development, social services, or related field preferred.
  • Bilingual skills are a plus.
