Filmmaker and Lecturer Valarie Kaur presents a two-hour interdisciplinary workshop for attorneys and law students on legal responses to race and religion in post-9/11 America. The workshop examines the powers and limitations of the law's present treatment of race with special focus on national security and immigration concerns in the war on terror. Participants gain a foundational understanding of major trends in the law, brainstorm progressive approaches to race and religion in the Obama era, and explore the role of public interest lawyers as allies in struggles for social justice.
Topics will include stories of violence and profiling against Sikh, Arab and Muslim communities; racial and religious diversity and pluralism; ethical models for storytelling and legal representation; and the engagement of documentary film in legal advocacy and social change.
Two Elimination of Bias credits have been applied for to the Minnesota Board of Continuing Legal Education.
