13th Annual Circle of Women

Circle of Women 2009

A sold out crowd of 1,320 attended this premiere fundraising luncheon on April 30th. People gathered early to network and shop the silent auctions of purses while being treated to an orange carpet runway show produced by Jon Charles Pure Salon.

The luncheon celebrated Women’s Leadership Across Generation. Girls and women of all ages spoke about opportunities at the YWCA of Minneapolis that have shaped their personal Speakers at Circle of Women 2009 leadership development. Speakers (pictured at right) included: Kiyanne Bruguier of Strong Fast Fit youth, Roda Hassan of Discovery Leadership, past Board Chair Mary Lee Dayton, and Jenna Carlson an Early Childhood Education parent. Signature event artwork was created by local artist Melodee Strong in collaboration with girls in after-school programs at the Midtown YWCA.

Thank you to all the sponsors, donors, volunteers and staff who made this event a huge success!

11:30 - 1:30 pm - program and facilitated table dialogue

Come hear keynote speaker Valarie Kaur.
Valarie has emerged as a powerful voice for racial and religious dialogue from a new generation of leaders in post - 9/11 America. A third generation Sikh American, she is a writer, public speaker, lecturer in religion and ethics, and awardwinning filmmaker. Valarie presently studies the intersections between religion and law at Yale Law School. and serves as founding director of the Discrimination and National Security Initiative at the Harvard Pluralism Project.

Valarie is well known for her film, Divided We Fall: Americans in the Aftermath. From the still-shocked streets of Ground Zero to the desert towns of the American West, her epic journey confronts the forces unleashed in a time of national crisis – racism and religion, fear and forgiveness – until she finds the heart of America . . . halfway around the world. .
